SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis team begins its 2013 dual-match season on Friday at Aztec Tennis Center. SDSU will play host to UC San Diego at 1 p.m. PT, and will face UC Riverside later in the evening at 6 p.m.
The Aztecs begin the spring season ranked No. 67 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) preseason poll after finishing the 2011-12 season ranked No. 65. All eight players on the roster gained experience last season, as SDSU finished the 2012 dual-match season 15-8 and 4-2 in the Mountain West.
Sophomore Andranik Khachatryan (Burbank, Calif) is ranked No. 123, while senior Derek Siddiqui (Long Beach, Calif.) and sophomore Thorsten Bertsch (Mannheim, Germany) each earned all-conference honors in 2012.
The Aztecs opened their 2012 dual-match season against UC Riverside, where they defeated the Highlanders, 7-0. SDSU also beat UCR, 7-0, in three-previous seasons from 2009-11. The last time San Diego State played UC San Diego was in 2006, when it defeated the Tritons, 7-0.
SDSU finished the 2012 dual-match season on a hot streak, winning four of its last five regular-season matches, including victories over No. 55 New Mexico and No. 57 UC Santa Barbara.
Following Friday's doubleheader, SDSU travels to Los Angeles, Calif., for the ITA Kick-Off where the Aztecs will take on USC Jan. 25, and either Fresno State or Georgia Tech on Jan. 26.
