SDSU Men's Tennis Returns To Action This Weekend
Jan. 11, 2006
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis team resumes its 2005-06 schedule this Friday when it plays host to No. 53 Arizona State in the Aztec Invitational. The event will alternate between two different venues over the course of three days. On Friday, the competition will be held at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, slated to begin at 1 p.m. The action shifts back to SDSU's Aztec Tennis Center for the final two days with an 11 a.m. start on Saturday, while Sunday's matches are set to begin at 9 a.m.
The Aztecs will renew some acquaintances when they square off against the Sun Devils, having opposed them in several matches at the Wilson/ITAWest Regional championships last October. In singles play, Stephan Timu defeated ASU's Nick Hegarty, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, in the round of 64, while in the round of 32, Eugenio Romero fell victim to the Devils' Christopher Biro in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Newcomer Robert Sabo earned a spot in the quarterfinal round after upsetting ninth-seeded Jonathan Kinsella, 7-6 (4), 7-5. Kinsella, however, exacted a measure of revenge in doubles competition, teaming with Ryan McBride to upend the Aztec tandem of Romero and Markus Dickhardt, 8-3, in the round of 16.
SDSU will be bolstered by the return of senior Benedikt Stronk, whose singles victory in the Mountain West Conference championship against Brigham Young secured an automatic berth for the Aztecs in the NCAA tournament last spring. Stronk, a first-team all-MWC singles performer last year, rejoins the scarlet and black after playing abroad during the fall season.
SDSU has also added freshman Billy Timu, the brother of senior Stephan Timu. The younger Timu arrives on Montezuma Mesa after a completing a successful run on the highly competitive junior circuit. He held a career-high combined ranking of 145, which placed him among the top junior players in the world in 2004.
The Aztecs enter the spring with a No. 43 ranking according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll released Tuesday. SDSU will face 12 opponents during the dual match season who are ranked among the top 75 in the ITA poll. Of the top 20, the Aztecs will travel to No. 20 USC on Jan. 27 and No. 5 UCLA on Feb. 14, while No. 9 Pepperdine visits the Mesa April 8.
Individually, sophomore Robert Sabo received a No. 84 ranking in the ITA poll. The Rancho Mirage, Calif., native posted a 4-4 record during the fall, which included three straight victories at the Wilson/ITA regional event.
SDSU opens dual match play at home against UC Riverside on Jan. 21, scheduled for 11 a.m.
