Jan. 10, 2007
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis team opens its 2007 spring season by playing host to the Aztec Invitational set for Jan. 12-14. The event, which will have no team scores, will feature the 49th-ranked Aztecs, No. 57 Arizona State and Santa Clara. First-day action is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. PST at Aztec Tennis Center.
San Diego State returns five letterwinners off last season's Mountain West Conference regular season championship team that finished league play with a 6-0 record (15-8 overall). Among those returning are seniors Markus Dickhardt and Christian Groh, who are the top-ranked duo in the West Region and the No. 9 pairing in the nation.
Individually, Groh is ranked No. 28 in the first FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings of the spring and is sixth among singles players in the West. Dickhardt, meanwhile, is rated as the West's 11th-best singles competitor. In addition to its two senior leaders, the Aztec doubles team of Anthony Gomez and Billy Timu sit at No. 13 in the West Region doubles poll.
The Sun Devils are coming off a fall season where they were victorious in their own tournament, the ASU Thunderbird Invitational. Arizona State breezed through the competition setting up an all-Sun Devil final in both singles and doubles play. In the end, freshman Juan Carlos Rebraza was crowned the singles champion and later took home the doubles title with T.J. Bellama as his partner.
The Broncos visit America's Finest City with seven letterwinners back from last season's squad. SCU has a balanced roster with two seniors, three juniors, three sophomores and three freshmen. At the ITA Northwest Regionals, Santa Clara was led by junior Blane Shields who recorded a 4-1 record in singles and teamed with Kevin McQuaid to advance to the doubles round of 16 before falling to the tournament's No. 2 seed.
