Aztecs Win Mountain West Conference Regular Season Crown
April 17, 2005
USAFA, Colo. - The 37th-ranked San Diego State men's tennis team won the Mountain West Conference regular season title outright with its 5-2 victory over the Air Force Academy Sunday morning. With the Aztecs' 11th consecutive win, SDSU closes out the 2005 season with a 15-5 overall record, including a perfect 5-0 mark in conference play.
For the sixth straight match, the Aztecs claimed the doubles point. Benedikt Stronk and Armando Carrascosa were 8-6 winners at No. 1 over Chris Dong and Trevor Johnson. Their teammates at No. 3, Markus Dickhardt and Eugenio Romero, came away with the same result after their 8-4 triumph over the Falcon duo of Tyler McClung and Robby Alexander.
In singles action, three Aztecs kept their winning streaks alive. At No. 5, Daniel Jung posted his ninth straight victory after he used a, 6-2, 6-2, performance to down Justin Lau. SDSU sophomore Dickhardt notched his fifth consecutive win when he defeated Air Force's McClung in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2. Rounding out the trio was Romero, a 7-5, 7-6(3) winner at No. 6 to tally his second in a row.
In addition, Dontia Haynes bounced back from yesterday's loss to record a, 6-3, 6-4, win at No. 4 over Dong.
SDSU's 11-match winning streak is its longest since before the 1996 season and is the longest to close out the regular season since the 2001 squad won eight in row. The Aztecs' undefeated conference record is also their first since that same 2001 team accomplished the feat.
The Aztecs will return to action April 28 when they compete in the 2005 MWC Men's Tennis Championships at Barnes Tennis Center. The full tournament schedule will be available at a later date.
