SDSU Men's Tennis Can't Overcome Loss of Senior in 5-2 Loss to BYU
April 9, 2009
SAN DIEGO - Playing without the team's lone senior, Bartosz Golas, who remained home with the flu, the Aztecs shuffled the lineup to no avail on Friday afternoon, as Brigham Young defeated San Diego State 5-2 in a Mountain West Conference men's tennis match at the Aztec Tennis Center.
The Aztecs fall to 12-9 on the season and drop their MWC opener. The Cougars improve to 14-10 overall and 2-2 in league play. This marked just the third time in 10 home matches that San Diego State has not come out victorious.
With Golas, who played No. 2 singles for SDSU in its most recent match, out, the Aztecs shifted a majority of the lineup up one position. Despite the changes, the Aztecs received victories from Achim Ceban at number one singles and Giovanni Vaglietti at number three singles. The Aztecs were competitive in other matches, with Juan Gomez dropping a three-set match to BYU's Evan Urbina at number two singles and Andre Felix and Jordan Colman losing second-set tiebreakers.
The Cougars opened the day by taking the doubles point in dramatic fashion. Thomas Shubert and Cassidy Mears recorded a 9-7 victory over Tim Schulz van Endert and Andre Felix at number two doubles to take an early 1-0 lead.
The Aztecs return to action tomorrow when they face TCU. Match time at the Aztec Tennis Center is set for 2 p.m. PT.
