Men's Tennis Uses Strong Singles Play To Defeat UNM

SAN DIEGO - The No. 58 San Diego State men's tennis team received victories from the top four positions in the singles lineup to post a 4-3 victory over No. 55 New Mexico at the Aztec Tennis Center on the SDSU Campus. The Aztecs, who improved to 7-1 at home this season, are now 12-6 overall and 2-1 in Mountain West Conference, while the Lobos drop to 14-6 overall and 1-1 in league play.
San Diego State and New Mexico have each won three Mountain West Conference titles in the 12-year history of the league. Today's victory marked the third time in the last four seasons that the Aztecs have won the battle between the two Mountain West Conference tennis powers by a 4-3 margin. The Aztecs also claimed victories by identical scores in 2009 and 2010.
New Mexico claimed the doubles point, sweeping all three matches to take a 1-0 lead.
The Aztecs were able to battle back by sweeping the top four singles matches. Senior Javier Pulgar became the second Aztec player to record double-digit victories in dual action, with a 6-3, 6-4 straight-set victory over Jason Phillips at number one.
Derek Siddiqui, a junior from Long Beach, Calif., won his sixth match of the season at number two singles, with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win over Ben Dunbar. Freshman Thorsten Bertsch defeated Phil Anderson, 6-3, 7-6 (5) at number three. Bertsch improved to 11-5 in dual competition and won his team-high 18th match of the season. Another freshman, Freddy Gelbrich, posted a win at number four singles. He defeated Connor Berg, 6-4, 6-0.
San Diego State is back in action on Sunday when the Aztecs play host to TCU. Match time is set for 11 a.m. PT.
