Aztecs Defeat UNLV, 5-2, To Complete Weekend Sweep
April 2, 2006
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis team completed its feast on Mountain West Conference opponents on Sunday afternoon with a 5-2 decision over UNLV at Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas, Nev. With the victory, the Aztecs (10-6, 3-0 MWC) won their fourth straight match and took sole possession of first place atop the league standings. The Rebels, meanwhile, saw their record drop to 13-5 on the season and 2-1 in the MWC.
Among the keys for SDSU's recent success has been its ability to seize momentum early on in doubles competition. The scarlet and black continued that trend on Sunday, pocketing all three matches for the second day in a row. The No. 1 pairing of Benedikt Stronk and Markus Dickhardt once again delivered a stellar performance, defeating the UNLV duo of Joel Kielbowicz and David Campbell, 8-3. The tandem of Stephan Timu and Anthony Gomez were also triumphant, cruising to an 8-2 win over Elliot Wronski and Brett Hunter, while the twosome of Christian Groh and Eugenio Romero completed the sweep with an 8-6 win over Romain Massaro and Wesley Burrows.
In singles action, Groh continued his white-hot play, disposing of Wronski on the No. 2 court, 7-5, 6-2, to keep his winning streak alive at seven matches. Dickhardt was also victorious in straight sets at the No. 3 spot, breezing past Massaro, 6-4, 6-0.
Meanwhile, Timu and Gomez encountered more stubborn opponents in their respective contests, but both players survived their three-set battles in convincing fashion to help secure the victory for the Aztecs.
SDSU will step out of conference next weekend when it returns home for a pair of matches at Aztec Tennis Center. On Saturday, April 8, the Aztecs will lock horns with second-ranked Pepperdine, starting at 2 p.m. The following day, the scarlet and black closes out its 2006 home schedule with a showdown against UC Santa Barbara on April 9, beginning at 1 p.m.
