SDSU Men's Tennis Wins Second Straight, Defeats UCSB, 6-1
March 10, 2007
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The San Diego State men's tennis team turned in its most complete performance of the season as it downed UC Santa Barbara, 6-1, at the UCSB Recreation Center Courts Saturday afternoon. The win marks the Aztecs' second straight and improves their record to 4-5 on the season, while the Gauchos fall to 2-10.
San Diego State started the day off on a positive note by winning the doubles point. Markus Dickhardt and Juan Gomez won for the third time this season after disposing of Bijan Hejazi and Max Taylor, 8-3, at No. 3. UC Santa Barbara made it interesting after its No. 2 team of Josh Finkelstein and Nigel Burton walked away with an 8-3 victory over Billy Timu and Robert Sabo, but the Aztecs secured the point following Achim Ceban and Anthoney Gomez's 8-2 win over Anders Dalskov and Grant Robertson at No. 1.
What turned out to be a 1-0 lead in favor of SDSU soon ballooned into a 2-0 advantage after Sabo won by default at No. 6. From that point on, it was no looking back for the Aztecs as Ceban was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Taylor at No. 5, while Anthony Gomez recorded a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 3 to clinch the match.
For good measure, the Aztecs went on to post two more wins as 67th-ranked Dickhardt posted a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Hejazi at the top of the order and Juan Gomez won in straight sets at No. 4.
The Gauchos' only team point came at No. 2, where Dalskov downed No. 76 Christian Groh, 7-6, 3-6, 10-8, in a super-tiebreaker.
San Diego State returns to the courts on Monday, March 12, as it plays host to 75th-ranked Arizona at Aztec Tennis Center. The match is set for a 1:30 p.m. PDT start.
