LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Top-ranked UCLA won three singles matches in straight sets en route to a 4-0 victory over 33rd-ranked San Diego State in the first round of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championship on Thursday in Louisville, Ky. The Aztecs will face 22nd-ranked Texas in the backdraw on Friday, while the Bruins advance to play eighth-ranked Duke in the quarterfinal round. The Bruins won matches at number two and number three doubles to take a 1-0 lead. Erfan Djahangiri and Alberto Francis defeated Daniel Jung and Gabe Coren of San Diego State, 8-1, at number three doubles. Tobias Clemens and Lassi Ketola posted an 8-3 win over Felix Hardt and Armando Carracasa at number two doubles to clinch the point. The Bruins claimed singles victories at numbers one, three and six. Francis defeated Mike Coelho, 6-1, 6-2 to give UCLA a 2-0 advantage. In a battle of top 15 singles players, 12th-ranked Clemens defeated 13th-ranked Oliver Maiberger, 6-4, 6-1, to give the Bruins a 3-0 lead. UCLA sealed the match with 38th-ranked Rodrigo Grill claiming a 7-5, 6-2 win at number three singles over Felix Hardt. The 16-team tournament continues through Sunday.
