Aztec Men's Tennis Finishes Strong on Final Day of Aztec Invitational
Jan. 14, 2007
SAN DIEGO - The No. 49 San Diego State men's tennis team concluded play at the Aztec Invitational in a big way, winning five singles events in the final day of the three-day competition Sunday at Aztec Tennis Center. The round-robin format, in which teams scores were not kept, featured SDSU, Arizona State and Santa Clara. The Aztecs received straight set victories from senior Christian Groh, senior Anthony Gomez, freshman Michael Beron (San Diego/Scripps Ranch HS) and sophomore Billy Timu. Groh defeated Arizona State's Ryan Waits, 7-5, 6-3, while Gomez picked up a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Santa Clara's Blane Shields. Beron won both sets over Arizona State's Jack Marsh by a 6-3 margin, and Timu defeated Brian Brogan of Santa Clara, 6-2, 6-3. SDSU's other singles victory came from freshman Achim Ceban. Ceban dropped his first set to Brogan, 2-6, but rebounded in the final two sets, winning both by 6-2 scores. San Diego State junior Robert Sabo fell to Santa Clara's Bobby Rasmussen, who would go on to win the Black Group with a perfect 3-0 victory in singles, in two sets, 6-2, 6-3. The doubles competition wasn't as kind for the Aztecs, as they lost all three matches on the final day. Rasmussen teamed with Jan Macek for a close 9-8 victory over SDSU's Sabo and Markus Dickhardt. The Santa Clara duo was declared the winner of the doubles bracket. San Diego State will return to action on Saturday when it hosts Big West foes Cal Poly and UC Riverside at the Aztec Tennis Center on Saturday.
