Sept. 17, 2007
SAN DIEGO - San Diego State sophomore Nick Cardenas (Thornton, Colo./Horizon HS) has been named the Top Drawer Soccer National Player of the Week for the period of Sept. 10-16.
Cardenas, who was also selected to the website's team of the week, helped the Aztecs to their second straight shutout in a 2-0 win over Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday.
A 2006 first-team pick on the Top Drawer Soccer All-Rookie Team , Cardenas anchored a defense that limited the Roadrunners to just on shot. In fact, Cal State Bakersfield, which came into Saturday averaging 11.4 shots per game, didn't get its first attempt until the 76th minute when Towa Manda's attempt went wide left.
The 6-5 Cardenas was brilliant in the air and was the main reason why the Roadrunners did not get a shot off on either of their nine corner kick attempts. The Aztecs have yielded just five shots, none on goal, over their last two matches.
SDSU travels to Las Vegas, Nev., to compete in the UNLV Tournament this weekend. The Aztecs takes on Missouri State at 5 p.m. Friday before meeting Drake University at 5 p.m. Saturday.
