SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's soccer team had four players named to the Pac-12 preseason all-conference team, CollegeSportsMadness.com recently announced. Senior Blake Wise (Frisco, Texas) earned first-team honors, while senior forward Jordan Ongaro (Edmonton, Alberta), senior midfielder Kevin Bick (Louisville, Ky.) and junior defender Evyn Hewett (La Palma, Calif.) were each selected to the second team.
Wise recorded four goals with five assists last season for the Aztecs, finishing tied for second on the team with 13 points, and had two game-winning goals. A 2012 first-team all-Pac-12 selection, Wise is also ranked No. 44 in Top Drawer Soccer's preseason national top-100 list.
Ongaro led the team last season with goals, 15 points and 27 shots on goal en route to being named all-Pac-12 honorable mention. Bick was a second-team all-conference selection a year ago, finishing third on the team with five goals. Hewett started all 19 games last season for the Aztecs, recording two goals and three assists for seven points.
The Aztecs begin their season on Friday, Aug. 30, when they play host to cross-town foe San Diego as part of the Courtyard Marriott San Diego Central Soccer Tournament. Game time is set for 7 p.m. PT at SDSU Sports Deck. SDSU will continue tournament play on Sunday, Sept. 1, against Florida International, also beginning at 7 p.m. PT.
San Diego State returns 11 players who started at least 10 games last season, including six of its top seven points' leaders. The Aztecs have eight games on their 2013 schedule against teams ranked in the preseason top 25, including three against teams ranked in the top 10. SDSU will take on eight teams that qualified for the 2012 NCAA Tournament, in addition to playing nationally-televised games against Pac-12 rivals UCLA (Oct. 5) and Washington (Oct. 18).
