Men's Soccer Plays Stanford to Tie, 1-1

STANFORD, Calif. - The San Diego State men's soccer team played Stanford to a tie, 1-1, on Sunday afternoon at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.
It was the Aztecs' second tie against Stanford this season, as SDSU (5-9-2, 2-5-2 Pac-12) remains in fourth place in the Pac-12 standings behind three teams ranked in the top-5 in the nation.
San Diego State played the final 32 minutes of the match down one player after senior Kody Duff was issued a red card in the 78th minute. Senior Abraham Villon led the Aztecs with five shots, while Meuser and senior John Pegg finished with three shots apiece. Senior goalkeeper John Marcuzzo recorded eight saves in his third-straight start in the net.
The Aztecs threatened in the first half, as Villon got off shots in both the 18th and 23rd minutes, but each sailed wide of the net. After a shot by Pegg went high in the 74th minute and his header went wide right in the 76th minute, Stanford's Jordan Morris scored on a hard shot from 15-yards out to put the Cardinal in front, 1-0, in the 78th minute.
San Diego State had more chances to pull ahead in the second half after Meuser knotted the score with his second goal of the season. Robbie Freise and Meuser each had shots saved by Stanford goalkeeper Drew Hutchins in the 89th minute, while Freise had another shot go wide left just before time ran out in regulation.
The Aztecs out-shot the Cardinal in the second overtime period, 3-1, as junior Evyn Hewett's shot sailed wide right in the 105th minute, Villon's shot was saved by Hutchins in the 107th minute and a shot by Wise went wide in the 108th minute.
San Diego State returns to action on Friday, Nov. 8, when the Aztecs play host to Wright State, beginning at 7 p.m. PT at SDSU Sports Deck.
Man of the Match: Sophomore goalkeeper John Marcuzzo (Oakland, Calif.) was named Man of the Match on Sunday after recording a career-high eight saves in his third-career start. Marcuzzo has tallied 15 saves in the four matches he's played in this season.
