Four Aztecs Named to PING's All-Southwest Region Squad

May 29, 2008

NORMAN, Okla. - San Diego State's Aaron Goldberg, David Palm, Johan Carlsson and Matt Hoffenberg have been selected to the 2008 PING All-Southwest Region team as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

Goldberg, who leads the squad with a 71.43 stroke average, was named the Mountain West Conference Men's Golfer of the Year on April 26 and was one of eight collegiate players selected to compete in the prestigious Palmer Cup next month in Scotland. The Aztec senior was also tops on the team with six top-5 finishes and 12 rounds in the 60s. A 2007 PING honorable mention All-American, Goldberg shot a season-low 9-under 204 at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational last October, finishing alone in third place to help the Aztecs capture the first of three tournament victories during the 2007-08 campaign. In addition, Goldberg carded a career-best 7-under 65 during the final round of the John Burns Intercollegiate in February, which is tied for third in school history for lowest 18-hole total.

Palm, who earned all-MWC honors along with Goldberg and Hoffenberg, enjoyed a successful return to the lineup this year after back surgery sidelined him for the 2006-07 season. The SDSU junior is third on the team in scoring at 73.17 and has posted three top-10 finishes, including a tie for the runner-up spot at the Barona Collegiate Cup where he shot a season-best 9-under 207. Palm was also instrumental in helping the Aztecs qualify for the NCAA Championships after making birdie on the final hole of regulation at the West Regional Championships, which forced a three-way playoff.

Carlsson holds a 72.73 stroke average and ranks third on the squad with three top-5 finishes. His best showing of the season came at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational where he tied for fourth out of 81 individuals at 8-under 205. Carlsson, a freshman, also produced in the clutch at the NCAA West Regional on May 17, carding two birdies and two eagles en route to a final-round 68 to help force a three-team playoff where the Aztecs advanced to the national championship series.

Hoffenberg, who ranks second on the team in scoring at 72.37, came on strong this spring with four top-10 finishes to his credit, including a co-championship at the Fresno State Lexus Classic in March when he logged a season-best 9-under 207 to help the Scarlet and Black successfully defend its team title. The MWC Freshman of the Year also fired a 7-under 65 during the final round of the Barona Collegiate Cup, which is tied for third on the school's all-time list for lowest 18-hole score.

The 2008 PING All-Region teams are comprised of the top 15 individuals in their respective regions in the Individual Ranking System. Additionally, any player ranked in the top 75 according to Golfstat or the Sagarin rankings not included in their region's top 15 are added to their All-Region team. Members of the PING All-Region teams are eligible for PING All-America honors.

San Diego State returns to the fairways on Friday with third-round play at the NCAA Championships on the campus of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind.
