Men's Golf Remains Fifth in Final Husky Invite Standings

BREMERTON, Wash. -- The San Diego State men's golf team concluded its first tournament of the season by remaining in fifth place in the final standings with a 54-hole total of 24-over 888 at the Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational in Bremerton, Wash. SDSU had three players finish in the top 25 at the par-72, 7,124-yard Olympic Course at Gold Mountain Golf Club. Aztec senior Tom Berry (New Haw, England), who opened the two-day tournament with a 1-under 71, managed to stay in the top 10 on the leaderboard, finishing tied for sixth place with an overall score of 1-over 217. Sophomore Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif.) had a solid first outing, tying for 18th place overall at 6-over 222. Schauffele posted his best round of the tournament on Monday at even-par 72. Following closely behind was freshman Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy) who was the third player in the top 25, tying for 22nd place at 7-over 223. Junior Austin Kaiser (Atascadero, Calif.) was the only Aztec not to rise in the standings in the final round, dropping from a tie for 25th place into a tie for 38th with a 78, including a pair of double bogeys and three bogeys in a 12-hole span. Kaiser finished at 12-over with a 228. Rounding out the San Diego State group was sophomore James Holley (Chatsworth, Calif.), who carded his best round of the tournament with a 76, going from 53rd to 51st place at 16-over 232. SDSU had three players compete as individuals on the par-71, 6,707-yard Cascade Course at Gold Mountain. True freshman Robert Gojuangco (San Diego, Calif.) claimed the best finish of the trio at 1-over 214 for the tournament. Fellow freshmen Gunn Yang (Pyeong Chang, South Korea) finished tied for 17th at 8-over 221 while Kevin Ko (Coquitlam, B.C., Canada) sat tied for 27th with a 19-over 232. The Aztecs return to action on Sunday, Sept. 23, at the Ping-Golfweek Preview in Alpharetta, Ga. Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational Team Scoring (Final) (Top five of 15 and SDSU results only) 1.
