SDSU Within Striking Distance After Second Round At MWC Championship
April 30, 2004
SUNRIVER, Ore. - San Diego State is in position to compete for its first-ever conference title as they sit four-strokes back at the MWC Championship after shooting a six-over 294 on Friday in Sunriver, Ore. The Aztecs opened the day with a one-stroke lead, but now sit in third place with a six-over total of 582. BYU leads the pack and New Mexico is second, one stroke ahead of SDSU. Senior Mark Warman is also challenging for the individual title after shooting a two-under 70 to remain in second place at five-under par 139, two strokes back of the leader. The final round of the tournament will begin with tee times at 9:30 am on Saturday morning. Warman, who also placed second in the MWC Championship in 2002, played a bogey-free round opening with 11 straight pars before posting a birdie on No. 12 and followed that with another on No. 15. The senior, a two-time All-MWC selection, entered the tournament as the fifth ranked player in the field and is seeking the second victory of his career. The Aztecs earned the individual MWC title in 2001 when John Lepak posted a one-stroke win. Aaron Goldberg and Andrew Scott both fired one-over 73 to jump up the leaderboard. Goldberg improved to 11th in the standings with a 147 total, while Scott is now 13th overall at 148. Jeff Hansen is also tied for 13th at 148 after shooting 78. Hansen was third entering the day after an opening round 70.
SDSU has finished second at the MWC Championship in two of the last four seasons and five times in conference tournaments since 1979, but has never been able to top the final leaderboard. The Aztecs, No. 36 in the last Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, are the fifth highest ranked squad in this season's tournament.
