Goldberg Takes Medalist Honors; SDSU Places Second at U.S. Intercollegiate
April 18, 2004
STANFORD, Calif. - SDSU freshman Aaron Goldberg shot a career-low 67 in Sunday's final round to secure medalist honors and lead the Aztecs to a second place finish at the U.S. Intercollegiate in Stanford, Calif. SDSU shot 286 on Sunday to finish at three-over 855 which placed them behind only No. 3 UCLA and at least 12 strokes ahead of the rest of the 19-team field. It is the third top-five finish in the last four tournaments for the Aztecs and the fourth time this season they have placed in the top two.
Goldberg began the day in a three-way tie for first after shooting 68 and 70 in Saturday's first two rounds. But the freshman pulled away from a field that featured three top-20 teams by shooting four-under 67, his lowest score ever and the second-lowest score of the tournament.
It is the second win for Goldberg this season, as he also won the Aztec Battle of the Lakes, but his first in varsity competition. It was also SDSU's second medalist performance of the year, as Jeff Hansen claimed the low score at the Duck Invitational, and the second straight year the Aztecs have taken the U.S. Intercollegiate individual title as senior Mark Warman won last season's event.
Warman returned to defend his title this season and placed ninth after shooting even-par 71 on Sunday to finish at one-under par 212. It is the team-leading sixth top-10 finish of the season for Warman.
Andrew Scott posted a 71 on Sunday, his best score of the tournament, to move up to 14th with a total of three-over 216. It is Scott's second top-20 finish of the year. Aaron Choi finished the scoring for SDSU shooting nine-over 222 to place 36th.
SDSU's has wrapped up the regular season and will next head to the MWC Championships on May 1-3 in Sunriver, Ore.
