San Diego State's Aaron Goldberg (Encinitas, Calif.) carded a 6-under-par 66 on Saturday to lead the Aztec men's golf team during the second day of competition at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. After two rounds, Goldberg finds himself in a tie for third place at 8-under 136, just five shots behind Oregon's Derek Sipe (-13), who remains perched atop the individual leaderboard at the 7,037-yard, par-72 Karsten Golf Course. Goldberg played bogey-free golf on Saturday, draining six birdies en route to his lowest score of the spring thus far. With his effort, the La Costa Canyon High alumnus has now completed 23 of 29 rounds this season at or below par, including 10 outings in the 60s. As a team, SDSU moved up four spots in the standings, finishing the second day in 11th place after firing a 4-under 288. The Aztecs were able to shave 14 strokes off their first-round score for a combined 6-over 582. Oregon (-20) and Texas A&M (-15) occupy the top two spots, respectively, followed by USC (-13), Arizona (-12) and host school Arizona State (-12). Meanwhile, three other Aztecs were able to improve on their day one performances, including sophomore Adam Porzak (Poway, Calif.), who vaulted 15 places from 78th into a tie for 63rd after shooting an even-par 72. Senior Cory Segall (La Jolla, Calif.) climbed five spots into the 63rd position as well, carding a 1-over 73, which was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 17th hole. Rounding out the scoring for SDSU was freshman Joacim Hultman (Gothenburg, Sweden), who rebounded from a shaky start on Friday to shoot a 1-over 73 for a combined 8-over 152.
The final 18 holes of the ASU Thunderbird Invitational will be contested on Sunday, April 15, with a 7 a.m. tee time. A live scoring link will be available on GoAztecs.com.
