Aztec Men's Golf Finishes Second at Barona Collegiate Cup

LAKESIDE, Calif. - Complete Results in PDF Format The San Diego State men's golf team was unable to maintain its first day lead and finished in second place at the Barona Collegiate Cup Tuesday at the 7,393-yard, par-72 Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside, Calif. Sophomore Matt Hoffenberg paced the Aztecs, finishing the tournament in a tie for third place on the individual leaderboard. Colorado State shot a 20-under 340 on the final day to rally from 12 strokes back and claim the team medal. The Rams were led by junior Dustin Morris, who claimed the individual medalist honors on the strength of his final round 66 on Tuesday. Morris ended with a 13-under 203 for the event as Colorado State finished with a two day total of 29-under 1,051. San Diego State could not duplicate its under-par success from the first day and completed the final 18 holes with an even-par 360 squad total. The Scarlet and Black completed tournament play with a three-round score of 23-under 1,057. The Aztecs' highest finisher was sophomore Matt Hoffenberg, who tied for third after carding an even-par 72 in his final round to finish with a score of 209 (-7). The Simi Valley, Calif. native entered the final day in a tie for first place, but could not match his under-par pace from the first two rounds. SDSU's next highest finishers were senior Bryan Martin and freshman Alex Kang. The duo tied for sixth with a score of 211 (-5). Martin (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) posted his lowest 36-hole total as an Aztec over the two days, while Kang (Oak Park, Calif.) recorded his lowest three-round total of the spring season. The Aztecs also had a pair of players place just outside the top-10 as freshmen Andrew Cooley and Colin Featherstone completed tournament action in a tie for 11th place. The pair completed the 36-hole tournament with identical scores of 1-under 215. Cooley (New Haw, Surrey, England) tallied his lowest 36-hole total of the spring. Featherstone, a Fallbrook, Calif. native, recorded his second consecutive top-10 effort in as many tries.
Sophomore Johan Carlsson shot an even-par 72 on the final day en route a tie for 20th position and a three-round even-par 216 total. The Landvetter, Sweden product wrapped up tournament play with his lowest 36-hole total this spring. Meanwhile, six other golfers also competed as individuals for the San Diego State "Black" team, led by freshman J.J. Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.), who fired a 1-under 71 over the course of the final 18-holes to finish in a tie for 10th place on the individual leaderboard with his 214 (-2). Freshman Tyler Morris completed final round action with a 2-under 70, his lowest 18-hole total of the tournament. The Encinitas, Calif. product completed the event in a tie for 29th position with a 4-over 220 total. Senior Ryan Citarella (Santa Ana, Calif.) carded a 6-over 222 to finish the final day in a tie for 32nd. Sophomore Jerry Porras (Tijuana, Mexico), who is making his first appearance of the spring season, carded a three-round 13-over 229 total to tie for 50th on the individual leaderboard. Senior David Palm (Landvetter, Sweden) and junior Michael Wynn (Las Vegas, Nev.) finished tournament play within the top-60, completing 36-hole play in 53rd and 59th position, respectively. The Aztecs will cap off a busy month next week with a short trip to Ranch Santa Fe, Calif. to compete in the exclusive Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship, March 22-24. San Diego State will be paired with Chattanooga, Duke and UC Irvine for the first two medal play rounds on March 22. The top eight finishing teams from medal play will advance to the championship bracket of match play.
