San Diego State redshirt sophomore golfer Colin Featherstone (Fallbrook, Calif.) moved up one spot on the individual leaderboard Monday after logging a second-round 1-under 70 at the 14-team Battle at the Beach in Newport Coast, Calif. Featherstone boasts a two-day total of 4-under 138, but as a team, the Aztecs dipped from third to sixth place at 9-over 719 through 36 holes at the par-71, 6,945-yard Ocean North Course at the Pelican Hill Golf Club. Featherstone enters Tuesday's final round one stroke out of third and four behind leader Chris Williams of Washington, who moved from ninth to first place with a 65 for a two-day total of 8-under 134. Featherstone's 138 through 36 holes is a career low and includes nine birdies and just five bogeys. Aztec sophomore J.J. Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.) dropped from ninth place into a tie for 20th with a 1-over 73, but is still just one stroke out of 10th place and two out of sixth. Junior Matt Hoffenberg (Simi Valley, Calif.) is the third SDSU player in the top 40 at 3-over 145 and junior Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) is tied for 44th with his second straight 73 for a two-day total of 4-over 146. Sophomore Alex Kang (Oak Park, Calif.) and freshman Tom Berry (New Haw, England) round out the SDSU contingent as each is tied for 57th at 8-over 150. Oregon State, which is ranked 24th nationally, continues to lead the team race at 7-under 703, but is just one stroke up on second place Washington, which is at 6-under 704. The inaugural Battle At The Beach is utilizing a unique format with six golfers per team, rather than the usual five. The best five rounds count toward each school's score. Tuesday's final 18 holes get underway at 8:30 a.m. PT with a shotgun start.
