SAN DIEGO - San Diego State linebacker Jerry Milling (Palmdale, Calif.) took home three awards at the annual Aztec football banquet held Sunday at the Sheraton San Diego & Marina on Harbor Island. Milling captured the John Simcox Most Valuable Player Award and joined Tony DeMartinis (Sun Valley, Calif.) as co-recipients of the Dr. R. Hardy/C.E. Peterson Captains Award. Milling and fellow linebacker Luke Laolagi (Reseda, Calif.) were also co-recipients of the Byron J. Chase Memorial Trophy on the defensive side. On the offensive side, quarterback Ryan Lindley (Alpine, Calif.) and wide receiver DeMarco Sampson (Chula Vista, Calif.) were the co-winners of the Byron J. Chase Memorial Trophy. Matthew Kawulok (Boulder, Colo.) grabbed the President's Award for High Academic Achievement, while Davion Mauldin (Compton, Calif.) was chosen as the Most Inspirational Player. The Outstanding Freshman Award went to Nik Embernate (Yucaipa, Calif.), while the Scout Team Player of the Year honors went to Robert Gregorio (Rolling Hills, Calif.) (offense), Eron Moses (Yorba Linda, Calif.) (defense) and Jacob Driver (Carlsbad, Calif.) (special teams). In all, 10 awards were presented to 11 football student-athletes and another was awarded to manager Michael Savvas (A.Z.T.E.C. Student Manager Award). Mike Costa, the sideline reporter for all Aztec home games and AM 600 KOGO, presided over the day's activities, which were also attended by the SDSU coaching staff, as well as friends and family members.
