SAN DIEGO -
The San Diego State football team will play New Mexico State and California in a home-and-home series over the next few years, SDSU director of athletics Jim Sterk announced today. Additionally, the Aztecs will play San Jose State in three consecutive seasons, beginning in 2014.
San Diego State will take on NMSU in Las Cruces, N.M. in 2013 (Sept. 13) and will play host to the Aggies in 2016 (Sept. 24). The 2013 game replaces SDSU's road contest at SJSU, which has been pushed back to 2016 (Sept. 17).
The Aztecs' series with Cal begins in Berkeley in 2015 (Sept. 12). The two teams will play again at Qualcomm Stadium in 2016 (Sept. 10).
San Diego State extended its series with the Spartans as well for 2014-15. With next year's game being moved back to 2016, SDSU and San Jose State will play in San Diego in 2014 (Sept. 13) and in San Jose in 2015 (Sept. 26) and 2016 (Sept. 17).
The Aztecs lead the all-time series with New Mexico State, 8-1-1, including wins in each of the past six meetings. In the last encounter between the two teams in 2010 in Las Cruces, San Diego State won, 41-21.
SDSU and the Golden Bears, meanwhile, haven't played since 1996, when California won at home by a 42-37 margin. Each team has won three games apiece in the series with the home team winning every time.
SJSU, meanwhile, has won the last three games in the series over the Aztecs, including a 38-34 victory earlier this season (Sept. 22) in a contest that featured one tie and four lead changes in the final quarter.
San Diego State defeated Wyoming, 42-28, last Saturday for its seventh consecutive victory to improve to 9-3 on the season and 7-1 in Mountain West play. The win gave SDSU a share of the MW title, its 19th overall and first league championship since 1998. The Aztecs will play in their school-record third consecutive bowl game on Dec. 20 against Brigham Young in the Poinsettia Bowl.
