Six Aztecs Earn Phil Steele Midseason Honors

CLEVELAND, Ohio. - Six San Diego State football players earned midseason recognition by Phil Steele's College Football Magazine, the publication announced on Tuesday.
Two Aztec defensive players were named to the midseason all-Mountain West defensive first team, as senior safety Nat Berhe (Colton, Calif.) and senior linebacker Nick Tenhaeff (Atascadero, Calif.) each received the honor.
Senior Colin Lockett (Diamond Bar, Calif.) was selected second-team special teams as a kick returner, while senior offensive lineman Bryce Quigley (Apple Valley, Calif.), junior wide receiver Ezell Ruffin (Long Beach, Calif.) and freshman running back Donnel Pumphrey (Las Vegas, Nev.) were each named third-team offense.
Berhe, a 2012 all-MW second-team selection, leads the Aztecs with 32 solo tackles and 52 total stops. He also has 2.5 tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries and two passes broken up. Tenhaeff is second on the team with 34 total tackles (24 solo), with a team-best seven tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble. Each was named to the Phil Steele Preseason all-Mountain West team, as Berhe was named first team and Tenhaeff was a second-team choice.
Lockett ranks second on the team with 615 all-purpose yards, averaging 23.2 yards per kick return with a long return of 35 yards. The senior was also a Phil Steele Preseason all-MW second-team selection.
Ruffin has recorded team-highs with 30 receptions and 477 receiving yards and a touchdown this season, averaging 15.9 yards per catch with a long of 62 yards. Pumphrey leads SDSU in rushing with 449 yards and a 7.4 yard per carry average, along with 10 receptions for 129 yards and a team-best seven total touchdowns. Meanwhile, Quigley has started all six games this season at left tackle for the Aztecs after being named an all-MW honorable mention selection in 2012, and was also a Phil Steele Preseason all-MW third team selection.
San Diego State is the defending Mountain West champion, and is currently riding a three-game winning streak after its road victory over Air Force, 27-20, on Oct. 10. The Aztecs play host to Fresno State on Saturday, Oct. 26, as SDSU continues its quest for its 20th conference title all-time.
