BETHPAGE, N.Y. - San Diego State junior football player Gavin Escobar has been named to the 2012 Mackey Award Midseason Watch List, given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end, the Nassau County Sports Commission announced today.
It's the second consecutive year that Escobar has made the midseason watch list. He was already on the preseason watch list, which was announced in July.
In seven games this season, the Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., native leads the Aztecs with 21 receptions and 278 yards, while adding two touchdowns. Escobar, who is averaging 13.2 yards per catch and has 11 receptions for a first down, has caught at least one pass in 14 straight contests. He has six catches for 20 or more yards this year, the most on the team.
For his career, Escobar has 101 receptions for 1,381 yards and 13 touchdowns. The 101 receptions are tied for 25th all-time at SDSU.
San Diego State, which is 4-3 this season and 2-1 in the Mountain West, travels to Reno, Nev., to take on Nevada (6-1, 3-0 MW) at 7:30 p.m. PT Saturday in a game that will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.
