"Go Green!" at the San Diego State-Idaho Football Game

Sept. 19, 2008

SAN DIEGO - The Aztecs are committed to making San Diego a "greener" city by encouraging fans to participate in the upcoming "Red and Black Go Green!" event hosted during the SDSU vs. Idaho football game at Qualcomm Stadium September 27.

Upon entering the stadium parking lot, fans will receive a "Passport to Green Living" card, promoting all of the participating companies in the Green Expo, presented by Waste Management. Aztec fans visiting all of the companies will be entered into a drawing to win an Aztec-customized scooter, courtesy of Scoony Scooter. Other locally based companies involved in this Go Green initiative with SDSU Athletics are as follows: San Diego Gas & Electric; Think Blue; La Jolla Termite and Pest Control; Associated Students' Green Love; E3; Cost Plus World Market; Aztec Shops; Global Disposal and Urban Corps.

"Waste Management is proud to support the `Red and Black Go Green!' game", said Carl Scherbaum, District Manager of Waste Management of San Diego. "Partnering with SDSU to promote sustainability is a winning game plan, and another way WM can make forward progress with our Green message in the communities we serve. As the title sponsor of the Green Expo, we are excited to have the opportunity to share the recycling and environmental information to help students, alumni and all Aztec fans Think Green."

There are numerous synergies between the participating companies and Aztec fans during this pre-game event. San Diego Gas & Electric and the City of San Diego will host a CFL lighting exchange in which Aztec fans can trade in their old incandescent light bulbs for new energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs). Fans can trade in up to five bulbs for CFLs, which use 75 percent less energy and last 10 times longer.

"SDG&E is excited to partner with San Diego State Athletics for the `Red and Black Go Green' event," said Risa Baron, Energy Programs Supervisor of San Diego Gas & Electric. "As a member of the San Diego community, SDG&E is always searching for ways to improve this beautiful city and to help conserve energy for the people who call this city their home."

Baron added, "One of the easiest and smartest ways to do so is to provide an opportunity for San Diegans to trade in their old incandescent bulbs for energy-efficient CFL bulbs, which provide immediate savings on energy. We remind all Aztec fans that they can bring five incandescent bulbs to the game, along with their valid California ID or SDG&E electric bill, and we will exchange them for these energy efficient CFLs at no cost."

"We're thrilled to host a `go green' initiative for the community and our partners," said Diane Penny, general manager for Aztec Sports Properties, which is the multimedia rights holder and sports marketing arm for San Diego State University. "Fans coming out with their old light bulbs can look at a cost savings of up to $30 or more per light bulb over the lifetime of the bulb. It's important to SDSU Athletics to pitch in and help San Diego be as `green' as possible."

Another opportunity for savings comes in the form of 5000 gas cards ($5 each) that also contain automobile eco-friendly tips to teach Aztec fans how to conserve energy. Additionally, more energy saving tips will be shown on the Jumbotrons during the Aztec-Vandals football game, which kicks off at 5 p.m. Burger Lounge, a San Diego-certified green restaurant, will be catering the SDSU Athletics pre-game hospitality area, and La Jolla Termite and Pest Control - an organic alternative to chemical pest control - will be the pre-game sponsor of the "Red and Black Go Green!" initiative.

"As the owner of La Jolla Termite and Pest Control, I am very excited and honored to be part of the Aztecs `Red and Black Go Green!'," said Mike Lawson. "Going `green' with organics has been a practice for La Jolla Termite and Pest Control for over two years now and having the opportunity to educate more Aztec fans and San Diegans has always been fun and exciting."

Aztec Sports Properties, a property of Learfield Sports, secured the participating Green Expo companies on behalf of SDSU Athletics and will oversee the entire "Red and Black Go Green!" event on game day. In addition to San Diego State, Learfield Sports manages the multimedia rights for nearly 50 collegiate institutions and associations including other Mountain West Conference members New Mexico and Wyoming. Learfield Sports is an operating unit of Jefferson City, Mo.-based Learfield Communications, Inc., which made its initial foray into the world of sports marketing in 1975 as the radio rights holder for the University of Missouri, a client still today.
