SAN DIEGO -
The 18th in a daily series during fall camp, get to know freshman linebacker Ross Williams (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.).
GoAztecs.com: Why did you choose San Diego State?
Williams: I chose (SDSU) because it's close to home and I liked the coaching staff. I also liked the program and the position they were going to play me at.
GoAztecs.com: How have practices been for you so far?
Williams: They have been pretty good. Just recently we've been working on Cal Poly so I've been on scout team and it's kind of challenging.
GoAztecs.com: What do you like to do in your spare time?
Williams: In my spare time I like to hang out with my friends and watch TV. I don't really do much.
GoAztecs.com: Did you play any other sports?
Williams: In high school I just played football, but when I was a little kid I also played soccer.
GoAztecs.com: How did you get started in football?
Williams: When I was in second grade my dad wanted to get me and my brother into it, so we both went out and played Pop Warner and have been playing ever since.
GoAztecs.com: Who is the best player you played with in high school?
Williams: The best player I've played with would probably be (quarterback) Mark Sanchez at USC. I played with him in high school when I was a freshman and he was a senior.
GoAztecs.com: What is your most memorable moment from your high school football career?
Williams: My most memorable moment was in my senior year when we went to play in the Ohio vs. USA Challenge. We were able to hold off this team from Ohio and beat them in the last minute. We got to play in Cincinnati's stadium (Paul Brown Stadium), so that was pretty cool.
GoAztecs.com: Who did you look up to as a football player?
Williams: I looked up to (senior linebacker) Zach Clarke and my brother. He was a senior when I was a freshman and we played the same position so I wanted to be like him.
GoAztecs.com: Has it been helpful having your brother (defensive lineman Ryan Williams) here?
Williams: Yeah, I get to hang out with him all the time. Meeting people when I got here was kind of hard, but I always had my brother to hang out with, so it was a lot easier on me.
GoAztecs.com: Do you have a favorite NFL team?
Williams: No. To be honest, I don't really watch the NFL. I mostly watch college football.
GoAztecs.com: What are you looking forward to most about the home opener next weekend?
Williams: I'm looking forward to finally going out to Qualcomm and showing everyone what San Diego State can do. I think we're going to be a good team this year.
GoAztecs.com: Do you know what you want to study at SDSU?
Williams: I'm not sure yet, but maybe law enforcement.
Stay tuned for the final question and answer session of the series later today featuring freshman offensive lineman Erik Quinones.
