Yoshida's Field Goal Lifts SDSU Black Team To Victory In Annual Spring Game
May 2, 2009
SAN DIEGO - Senior place-kicker Lane Yoshida (Pinole, Calif.) hit a 49-yard field goal with 17 seconds remaining to lift the Black squad to a 20-17 victory Saturday in the San Diego State football team's annual Red & Black Game. Over 2,000 fans were in attendance at the SDSU Sports Deck for the Aztecs' 15th and final practice of 2009 spring drills. The Red team rallied from a 10-point deficit entering the fourth quarter to knot the game at 17-17, following a 43-yard field goal by Bryan Shields (Chula Vista, Calif.) and a 91-yard scoring drive capped by a 19-yard touchdown pass from Drew Westling (Mission Viejo, Calif.) to DeMarco Sampson (Chula Vista, Calif.). Following punts by both sides, the Black team got the ball back at its own 28-yard line, taking seven plays to set up Yoshida's game-winning field goal. The Red squad attempted to respond, but Westling's fourth-down heave was intercepted by Andrew Preston (Centennial, Colo.) as time expired. Both teams' starting quarterbacks threw for over 200 yards, as Westling completed 14 of his 26 attempts for 260 yards and two scores, while Ryan Lindley (Alpine, Calif.) went 18-for-37 for 235 yards and one TD. Sampson led all receivers with seven catches for 186 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Junior Vincent Brown (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) had a team-best eight receptions for 126 yards for the Black side. The Red team actually started the afternoon with a 7-0 lead on the first Westling to Sampson hook-up, this time on a 54-yard reception on its first drive of the afternoon. Junior defensive end B.J. Williams (Aurora, Colo.) returned the favor for the Black squad, intercepting a tipped Westling pass and returning it 43 yards for the lone defensive touchdown of the day.
A 45-yard Yoshida field goal rounded out scoring in the first half, as the Black team got two key interceptions on each of the Red squad's final two possessions to enter the break up 10-7. The only scoring in the third quarter was a 27-yard touchdown pass from Lindley to Brown, which established the largest advantage of the game at 17-7. Defensively, the Black team had four interceptions on the afternoon, with one each by Williams, Preston, Darryn Lewis (Elk Grove, Calif.) and Ross Williams (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.). Senior linebacker Jerry Milling (Palmdale, Calif.) led all tacklers with seven stops, including three for a loss, for the Red team. Williams, meanwhile, posted six tackles and two sacks to go with his interception return for a touchdown. San Diego State will report to campus in early August to open fall camp in preparation for the 2009 season, which starts on the road at UCLA on Sept. 5. SCORING PLAYS
