Balanced Offense Highlights First SDSU Football Spring Scrimmage
March 25, 2006 SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State football team completed its first scrimmage of spring workouts Saturday afternoon at the Aztecs' on-campus practice facility. The scrimmage lasted an hour and a half and featured 70 offensive plays. "I thought overall it was a good scrimmage," said first-year head coach Chuck Long. "We had good efforts on both sides of the football. The offense started out fast and the defense came out of halftime and played the second half very well. There are obviously things to build on." SDSU's three quarterbacks combined to complete their first 10 passes, while 14 different players had at least one reception. Redshirt freshman Kevin Craft (Valley Center, Calif.) was 5-for-8 for a team-best 95 yards through the air, while junior Kevin O'Connell (Carlsbad, Calif.) connected with redshirt freshman Tobias Shanks (Port Gibson, Miss.) on a 34-yard toss for the day's only touchdown. O'Connell was 6-for-7 for 88 yards and sophomore Darren Mougey (Scottsdale, Ariz.) completed all but two of his 10 pass attempts for 41 yards. The Aztecs' leading rusher was junior Brandon Bornes (Vista, Calif.), who carried nine times for 57 yards. Junior Lynell Hamilton (Stockton, Calif.) ran 15 times for 56 yards and redshirt freshman Attiyah Henderson (Rockledge, Fla.) averaged 3.4 yards on his 10 carries. Sophomore DeMarco Sampson (Chula Vista, Calif.) caught three passes for 60 yards and tight end Waika Spencer (Honolulu, Hawaii) recorded three receptions for 14 yards. Tight end Lance Louis (New Orleans, La.) and wideout Brett Swain (Carlsbad, Calif.) each had two catches apiece. Defensively, senior linebacker Joe Martin (Palmdale, Calif.) tallied a team-best nine tackles with four unassisted. Cornerback Donny Baker (Miami, Fla.) had six tackles and three others finished the afternoon with five. The defense recorded eight tackles for loss, three sacks and one interception by linebacker Luke Laologi (Reseda, Calif.). San Diego State continues spring drills next week with three practices, capped by another scrimmage on campus. Wednesday's workout is open to SDSU students, while the team will play host to an SDSU faculty and staff day on Saturday. Students, faculty and staff must bring their SDSU Red ID cards to be admitted. OFFENSIVE STATISTICS
