SDSU Football-San Jose State Postgame Quotes
Sept. 22, 2012
SAN DIEGO --
Head coach Rocky Long
Q. Coach, can you give us an opening statement?
Q. Did San Jose State do anything different in the fourth quarter, or was it just you not making many plays?
We're back to the same problem. They made plays. If we blitzed them, we didn't play good enough man coverage. If we didn't blitz them, we didn't get to the quarterback. In my opinion, the difference in the game is they were able to sack our quarterback with a four man rush. We were unable to get to their quarterback with a four man rush.
Q. Can you talk about at the end of the half, 4th and goal from the 8th, why did you opt for the field goal?
Because I thought it was the right thing to do.
Q. Then later in the third quarter, 4th and goal from the 2, you went for it?
Q. Was that part of the chart?
No, that's what I thought we should do.
Q. Did they change something up in the first half or second half in terms of what they were doing?
No, they just executed better.
Q. What happened to Seamus McMorrow?
He was suspended for the week because of violation of team rules.
Q. Do you expect that suspension to extend or is he going to have a chance to resolve it?
He has things that he has to take care of before he's let back on our team.
Q. A look at the last two times you've been on the field, obviously defense has not been there. At this point is there anything you can do to turn that around?
First of all, I disagree with you. The defensive effort was bad the last two drives. Up until the last two drives, it was pretty good. Because they scored on a kickoff return and they scored after a kickoff return to about our 18 yard line. I thought the defensive effort was pretty good except for the last two drives and then I think it stinks. You can blame me for that. Obviously, we're trying to make our players do something that they can't do and that's a coaching thing. So that's totally on me.
Q. So what are your options now as the defensive coordinator?
The option now is you've got to be inventive and try to figure out some zones that you're going to give up some pass plays, but some zones where you can maybe get a decent heat on the quarterback. You'll give up passes like you always do, but we obviously can't get to the quarterback quick enough when we blitz. Or we don't play good enough man coverage when we blitz. And when we rush four, we don't even get close.
Q. On the game:
The kicking game was a huge part of the game. They got two touchdowns because of kickoff returns and the kicks weren't very good, but the coverage was terrible.
Q. Can you use film to help with kickoff coverage?
Certainly guys were in the wrong lanes, but we had guys that were making tackles and they didn't make the tackles. In fact, both of them we had a guy that nobody blocked that could have made the tackle, but he didn't make the tackle.
Q. Ryan, how tough was this loss to lose like this?
Ryan Katz: It was a tough loss. Whenever you lose it's tough. It was a hard-fought game and we just didn't pull it out.
Q. On the very last touchdown, what happened in terms of defense? What did
you guys see or not see?
Leon McFadden: We just didn't pay attention to our technique I guess you could say. We didn't execute the defense as we're coached to. That's what happened and we were caught slipping.
Q. From the defensive back standpoint, do you feel like you're capable of playing that kind of man coverage that needs to be played at this point?
Leon McFadden: Yes, when we are playing and honing in on our techniques and paying attention to our assignments, we're all good in cover.
Q. So on the last two drives, as they're coming down, how do you keep repeating this over and over again?
Leon McFadden: Yeah, we have to give credit to those guys. They were all good, but at the same time, we didn't execute to our best ability and that's what happened.
Q. How would you grade the defensive ability this September?
Leon McFadden: To be honest with you, we haven't reached our potential yet. We're waiting to do that. We need to do ASAP.
Q. Leon, it seemed in the first half their quarterback struggled and then he turned it on in the second half, especially in the fourth quarter:
Leon McFadden: It all came down to confidence, probably. He's a good quarterback, and he has some good guys on the outside and that's what happened.
Q. Offensively, does it feel like this is one of the better games that you guys have played? How would you grade yourselves on how you did on offense tonight?
Gavin Escobar: I think the offense played really well. There are two times we have to convert on third down and long, and at the end of the game we have to try to finish. Overall, we did play well.
Q. You came out again with a really strong run game. Was that a plan in order to establish the pass?
Ryan Katz: Yeah, that's our identity. All of the games we played so far, we've run the ball effectively. We want to be a running football team to set up the play action.
Q. Adam, talk about that long touchdown run you had:
Adam Muema: The line held their blocks. I made a man miss and scored. That's what I need to do.
Q. On Alec Johnson snapping with a broken hand:
Ryan Katz: It was fine. He's a tough guy. You break your hand and you have to snap with your other hand. Not too many guys can do that. He's doing fine.
Q. What happened on that exchange?
Ryan Katz: Bad snap. One snap of the game, it was on the ground. Things happen. Just got to try not to make those mistakes.
Q. How much of a galvanizing force was it to connect on a touchdown pass late in the game, how much of an energy boost was that?
Gavin Escobar: It was a big energy boost. It really got us going and brought up the morale. We've just got to finish the game though.
Q. Did they do anything up front or did anything that you hadn't seen on film? It looked like you were under pressure pretty much the whole night.
Ryan Katz: No, they weren't doing anything that we hadn't seen on film. We've just got to execute what we're taught to do. Like Leon said, I think that goes for the offense and defense. Today we just didn't score enough points.
