COACHING EXPERIENCE
Begins the eighth year of his third stint on Montezuma Mesa. For
the seventh consecutive year, he will work with the wide receivers
after coaching the Aztec running backs in 2005.
In 2012, mentored a young receiving corps that entered the season
with just four total career catches. Sophomores Colin Lockett, a
converted defensive back, and Dylan Denso, a walk-on, combined to
log 107 receptions for 1,604 yards and 11 scores. Lockett was also
tabbed to the Biletnikoff Award Watch List.
Was also in charge of the SDSU special teams unit a year ago that
featured two-time first-team all-league punter Brian Stahovich and
logged two kick returns for touchdowns.
Coached one of the best 1-2 receiver tandems in the nation in
2011, as both Vincent Brown and DeMarco Sampson were named
first-team all-Mountain West and were selected in the NFL Draft. The
pair combined for 2,572 yards and 18 touchdowns, while tallying 12,
100-yard receiving efforts.
In 2010, Brown and Sampson each eclipsed the 1,000-yard receiving
mark, becoming the first Aztecs to do so in the same campaign since
another McDaniels' coached duo, J.R. Tolver and Kassim Osgood in
2002.
Brown was one of just five non-seniors to be named a semifinalist
for the 2009 Biletnikoff Award, given to the nation's top receiver.
Tutored a pair of 2008 NFL Draft picks in wideouts Chaz Schilens
(Oakland Raiders) and Brett Swain (Green Bay Packers). Swain was a
second team all-conference pick in 2007, finishing second in the
league in receiving yards per contest (79.6). Schilens ended his
career with three straight 100-yard receiving games and ranked No. 1
in the Mountain West in 2007 in receiving yards in league outings
(100.7 ypg.).
Returned to SDSU in 2005, after a two-year stay on Mike Riley's
staff at Oregon State, which saw the Beavers earn invitations to two
straight postseason bowl games.
From 1994-96, coached the special teams and secondary at SDSU, and
in 2002, he was the receivers and special teams coach. That season,
Aztec wideouts J.R. Tolver and Kassim Osgood set NCAA single-season
records for receptions and receiving yards by two teammates.
Prior to 2002, was on the staff at California, coaching the Golden
Bear special teams and assisting with the defensive backs.
Served as a coach and administrator with the Washington Redskins
from 1998 to 2000. Was the Redskins special teams coach for three
seasons under head coach Norv Turner.
NFL background also includes a one-year stint as the wide
receivers coach for the Phoenix Cardinals (1993) and a stop with the
Philadelphia Eagles as a pro scout.
Began his coaching career at Hartnell College in Salinas, Calif.,
before joining the San Diego Chargers in 1989 as assistant special
teams coach. He remained with the Chargers until he returned to his
alma mater, Cal Poly, as special teams and secondary coach in 1992.
PLAYING EXPERIENCE
Cornerback on Cal Poly's 1980 NCAA Division II National
Championship football team. Honorable mention All-American as a
senior, a two-time team captain and finished his career with 13
career interceptions. Inducted into the Cal Poly Athletic Hall of
Fame in 2002.
Spent four years in the NFL with the Giants and Redskins, where he
was a part of a Super Bowl championship team in 1983.
EDUCATION
Received his bachelor's degree in social sciences from Cal Poly in
1981.
