COACHING EXPERIENCE
Andy Ludwig came to Montezuma Mesa in January 2011 and
begins his second season at San Diego State. Ludwig is the Aztecs'
offensive coordinator and also works with the tight ends.
In his 18th year as an offensive coordinator at the NCAA level,
he has 25 years of coaching experience overall. His teams have
been to 12 bowl games with six bids over the past seven campaigns..
Some of his prominent quarterback pupils include Heisman Trophy
finalist and 2002 NFL Draft No. 1 pick David Carr, as well as
current NFL players Kellen Clemens and Brett Ratliff.
A year ago, was in charge of an Aztec offense that compiled more
than 5,500 yards of total offense, including nearly 2,400 on the
ground, which are the program's most rushing yards since 1995. In
addition, SDSU accumulated 281 first downs, the sixth-highest total
in school history.
San Diego State produced eight games with 30 or more points
in Ludwig's first campaign, including four straight to end the season.
The squad also had five games without a turnover in 2011, the highest
turnover-free total in the program's 43 Division I seasons.
For just the fifth time in school history, SDSU had a 3,000-yard
passer and a 1,000-yard rusher in the same season. It marked only
the second time in the last 16 years that the Aztecs had that passing-
rushing combo.
Individually, Ludwig's offense had two players, running back Ronnie
Hillman and tight end Gavin Escobar, earn All-America honors
in 2011. Hillman, who ranked fourth nationally in rushing, was selected
in the third round of the NFL Draft, while quarterback Ryan
Lindley was a sixth-round choice this past April.
Came to SDSU after two seasons at California as offensive coordinator
and quarterbacks coach. He helped lead the Golden Bear
offense to a trio of 50-point games in 2010, the first time Cal had
done that since 2003. California converted 33-of-37 opportunities
inside the red zone a year ago, the highest percentage (89.2 percent)
in the Pac-10.
The Bears broke a school record for the fewest turnovers (17) in
a season in 2009, and participated in the Poinsettia Bowl.
Prior to his stay at Cal, served as the offensive coordinator at
Utah (2005-08), Oregon (2002-04), Fresno State (1998-01), Cal
Poly (1997) and Augustana (1993-94).
Helped Utah go to four consecutive bowl games, including a 2009
Sugar Bowl win over Alabama, as the Utes finished 13-0 with a No.
2 national ranking. That season, Utah put up 36.92 points per game
and he was named a finalist for the FootballScoop Offensive Coordinator
of the Year.
In 2005, the Utes led the MWC in total offense and ranked 12th
nationally at 473.0 yards per game.
At Oregon, tutored quarterback Kellen Clemens, who threw for
2,390 yards and 16 touchdowns as a sophomore. Wideout Samie
Parker also set a school record for most receptions in a season with
77 in 2003 and finished his Duck career as the school's all-time career
leader in catches and yardage. Running backs Onterrio Smith
and Terrence Whitehead both posted 1,000-yard rushing campaigns
during Ludwig's stay in Eugene.
Was a finalist for the 2001 Frank Broyles Assistant Coach of the
Year award after Fresno State finished fourth in the nation in both
scoring (40.00 ppg.) and total offense (501.57 ypg.). The Bulldogs
also became the first school in NCAA history to feature a 4,000-
yard passer, two 1,000-yard receivers and a 1,000-yard rusher in a
single season.
The Ogden, Utah, native has also spent time at Boise State
(quarterbacks coach, 1995-96), Utah (defensive graduate assistant,
1992), Idaho State (quarterbacks/receivers, 1989-91) and Portland
State (receivers, 1987-88).
PLAYING EXPERIENCE
Competed for two years as a wide receiver at Snow College in
Ephraim, Utah, from 1982-83, before lettering twice at Portland
State from 1985-86..
EDUCATION
Obtained his bachelor's degree in exercise science from Portland
State in 1988.
