San Diego State Opens a Two-Game Road Trip on Wednesday at San Diego With the City Championship on the Line
San Diego State (4-2) continues a stretch in which it plays four out of six games on the road this Wednesday when the Aztecs make the 9.4-mile journey west to face San Diego (4-2) at Jenny Craig Pavilion.

The Aztecs bounced back from their second loss of the season this past Saturday, by destroying Northern Arizona, 89-48. The 41-point margin of victory was the third-largest margin of victory for the Aztecs in Viejas Arena history and was the largest for SDSU since a 98-53 victory over UC San Diego on Nov. 27, 2001.

Malcolm Thomas led six Aztec players in double figures with 21 points and 10 rebounds for his sixth career double-double. He connected on 10-of-11 field goal attempts to tie for the third-best field-goal percentage (minimum 11 attempts) of the Steve Fisher era. Tyrone Shelley came off the bench to add 17 points and a team-high four steals, while Billy White added 12 points in 17 minutes of action.

The Aztecs shot 56.3 percent from the field and owned a 28-4 advantage in points off turnovers. SDSU never trailed in the game, marking the 35th time in the Steve Fisher era that the Aztecs have won a game in which it never trailed.

The 2009-10 edition of the San Diego State basketball team continues to be a work in progress, with only three of the top nine scorers having been in uniform for last season's record-setting 26-win campaign. Senior point guard D.J. Gay is the only Aztec to start all six games this season, with eight different players earning at least one start. Seven Aztec players are averaging seven or more points per game, led by junior forward Billy White's 16.2 ppg.

In addition to the many new faces on this year's squad, a rash of injuries has kept many players sidelined during the early portion of the season. Billy White (wrist), Tyrone Shelley (foot), Malcolm Thomas (knee), Tim Shelton (knee), Kawhi Leonard (ill), Chase Tapley (ill) and Alec Williams (ill) have all missed some sort of time in the early going.

San Diego is off to an impressive 4-2 start, including victories over Stanford and Oklahoma. The Toreros finished second in the prestigious Great Alaska Shootout (an event San Diego State won last season), falling to Washington State, 93-56, in the final.

Plenty is on the line Wednesday for the Aztecs, who are looking to extend a three-game winning streak against the Toreros. San Diego State has won six of the last seven encounters with the Toreros and are searching for a fourth consecutive win in the series for the first time since 1981-84. The Aztecs are also looking for a second consecutive victory over the Toreros on the USD campus for just the second time in school history. The only time that has occurred was Dec. 9, 1967, and Feb. 3, 1970, at the USD Sports Center.
