No. 25/23 Men's Basketball Plays Host to San Diego Christian
Nov. 12, 2012
SAN DIEGO -
Two days after playing aboard a retired aircraft carrier, No. 25/23 (AP/Coaches) San Diego State returns to the friendly confines of Viejas Arena to play host to San Diego Christian. Game time is set for 7 p.m. PT.
The home opener, which was originally scheduled for Sunday, is being televised live by FOX Sports San Diego. Eddie Doucette will have play-by-play duties and will be joined courtside by SDSU legend and former NBA player Michael Cage. As always, fans can listen to the game on KOGO 95.7 FM and AM 600 with Ted Leitner providing the details.
The Aztecs are coming off a 62-49 loss to No. 9/9 Syracuse in the Battle on the Midway. Despite the well-documented size advantage the Orange possessed, San Diego State were plus-10 in offensive rebounds (20-10), plus-2 in turnovers (16-18), plus-2 in steals (14-12) and were outrebounded overall by one (44-45). A poor shooting afternoon doomed the Aztecs as they shot 27.0 percent from the field, 5.6 percent from three and 42.4 percent from the line.
Mountain West preseason player of the year Jamaal Franklin led SDSU with 11 points and eight rebounds. Fellow preseason all-MW selection Chase Tapley added eight points and shared team-high honors with eight boards (Franklin) and three assists (Xavier Thames). Of the nine players that saw action, four were making their Aztec debut in JJ O'Brien, Dwayne Polee II, Winston Shepard and Skylar Spencer.
Despite the loss, SDSU remains in both major top-25 polls. The Aztecs are 25th in the Associated Press Top-25 and No. 23 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' poll. The Scarlet and Black have now been ranked in the AP poll for 14 straight weeks and been ranked in both polls for 13 consecutive weeks.
San Diego State makes its first regular-season appearance at Viejas Arena looking to continue a succesful run at its on-campus facility. The Aztecs have won six straight non-conference home games, which is four shy of entering the school's top-5 list. And since the beginning of the 2009-10 campaign, SDSU is 45-4 home, including a 25-1 mark vs. non-league opponents.
