Brandon Heath Named to MWC 10th Anniversary Men's Basketball Team
Oct. 13, 2008
SAN DIEGO - Former San Diego State men's basketball guard Brandon Heath has been voted to the Mountain West Conference's 10th Anniversary Men's Basketball Team, the league announced today. The MWC and San Diego State all-time leading scorer was one of 10 players chosen to the league's all-decade squad as voted by the fans, conference media and member institutions. Heath, a four-year letterwinner, scored 2,189 career points to place him No. 1 in total points scored in school and league history. The Los Angeles, Calif., native first broke the conference record of 1,782 points held by Ruben Douglas (2000-03) and later erased Michael Cage's (1981-84) school-record 1,846 points during the 2006-07 season. In Heath's four years, he helped the Aztecs to a pair of postseason appearances and 71 total victories, the second-most in school history since 1975-76. During Heath's junior season (2005-06), he led San Diego State to a 24-9 overall record, which included the school's first outright regular season conference title in its Division I history, its second MWC Tournament crown and its first NCAA Tournament berth since the 2001-02 campaign. Individually that season, Heath was a first-team all-conference choice, all-tournament team selection, Mountain West player of the year and Associated Press honorable mention All-American. Heath was the first San Diego State player to earn All-America recognition since Cage in 1984. In 2006-07, Heath finished his senior campaign by helping SDSU to its second straight 20-win season with a record of 22-11 and a spot in the postseason NIT. It marked just the third time in the program's Division I history in which the Aztecs advanced to postseason play in consecutive years. During San Diego State's run to the NIT, the Aztecs picked up a pair of wins over top-25 teams and recorded just their second postseason win of the Division I era and their first postseason road victory with its decision at Missouri State.
Overall, Heath was the first Aztec to earn all-MWC honors four times, was a two-time USBWA and NABC selection and won MWC player of the week honors a school-record eight times. Heath left San Diego State not only as the all-time leader in scoring, but in field goals (749), field goals attempted (1,815), three-point field goals (281), three-point field goals attempted (798), steals (217), games played (125), games started (120), double-digit scoring games (112) and minutes played (4,275). |
