SAN DIEGO -
The Aztecs, who have claimed the last two Mountain West regular-season titles, have been projected to win their third straight by the publication. Lindy's also has SDSU earning the MW's automatic bid and advancing to the Round of 16.
Junior Jamaal Franklin is Lindy's preseason Mountain West Player of the Year and a first-team all-league selection. The guard from Hawthorne, Calif., was also recognized as one of the top-10 players from "non-BCS" conferences and the MW's top playmaker and most entertaining player.
Backcourt teammate Chase Tapley was tabbed as a second-team all-Mountain West performer and rated as the league's top shooter.
On the newcomer front, Winston Shepard was regarded as San Diego State's top newcomer and ranked as the 31st-best freshman. First-year teammate Matt Shrigley, meanwhile, was selected as the conference's one player who will take people by surprise. The aforementioned duo and Skylar Spencer make up what Lindy's rates as the No. 24 recruiting class in the nation.
The Aztecs, who finished the 2011-12 campaign with a 26-8 record, are coming off their fourth straight season with at least 25 victories and their third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. In each of the last seven years, SDSU has won 20 or more games and advanced to the postseason.
In 2012-13, San Diego State is slated to return four of its five starters and its top four scorers from last season. The Aztecs are also slated to welcome three Division I transfers and a heralded recruiting class.
