SAN DIEGO - The San Diego International Sports Council in conjunction with San Diego State University, officially announced today plans for the 1st Annual San Diego Slam basketball tournament. The inaugural San Diego Slam event will be held on Saturday, December 11 at Cox Arena.
Scheduled to play in the 2004 San Diego Slam will be SDSU vs. University of California and USD vs. University of Southern California.
Making the announcement was Dan Novak, Chairman of the San Diego International Sports Council, Mike Bohn, Director of Athletics at San Diego State University and San Diego State University head basketball coach Steve Fisher.
"The San Diego International Sports Council is very excited with the teams who'll be playing in our first San Diego Slam event. This is going to be a big-time sporting event in our community that will grow every year. It will be an event basketball fans will want to mark on their calendars," said Novak. "Both of these games provide natural rivalries with all of the alumni from USC and Cal who live or near San Diego. We're hoping for a sellout in our first year."
"We are proud to be the host of what we believe will be a special event for the University and the entire community," Fisher said. "This is a great example of the San Diego International Sports Council and San Diego State working together to create a showcase event. We expect that this will grow to a level where elite programs want to play in Cox Arena on an annual basis."
Tickets to the event are part of the 2004-05 Aztec Men's basketball season ticket package, with Aztecs season ticket holders receiving a $10 savings off the $45 ticket price.
