SAN DIEGO - San Diego State is set to travel to Missouri State for the fourth annual Mountain West/Missouri Valley Challenge. The non-conference game between the Aztecs and Bears is scheduled for Nov. 17, in Springfield, Mo.
SDSU is 2-1 in Challenge games and will be making its first road trip to The Valley since 2009, which marked the first year of the MW/MVC Challenge. That season, the Aztecs defeated Drake before downing Wichita State at home in 2010 and losing to Creighton at home last year.
San Diego State and Missouri State have met four previous times, with the last meeting occurring in Springfield during the first round of the 2007 postseason NIT, a game in which the Aztecs won, 74-70. The all-time series is tied at 2-2, with both squads posting a 1-1 record on each other's home floor. The Bears won the first two meetings in 1951 (San Diego) and 1966 (Springfield), and the Aztecs have returned the favor in the two most recent outings (1967 - San Diego, 2007 - Springfield).
In 2011-12, Missouri State finished with a 16-16 overall record and a 9-9 effort inside the Missouri Valley Conference. The Bears are set to return two of its four double-figure scorers from a year ago in Anthony Downing (11.5 ppg) and Jarmar Gulley (10.4 ppg), who will both be seniors.
The Aztecs, meanwhile, finished the 2011-12 campaign with a 26-8 record and are coming off their fourth straight season with at least 25 victories and their third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. In each of the last seven years, the back-to-back Mountain West regular-season co-champions have won 20 or more games and have advanced to the postseason.
In 2012-13, San Diego State is slated to return four of its five starters and its top four scorers from this past season. The Aztecs are also slated to welcome three Division I transfers and a heralded recruiting class that was ranked No. 24 nationally by Rivals.com.
