Franklin, Tapley Earn All-Mountain West Honors
March 11, 2013
SAN DIEGO - San Diego State men's basketball student-athletes Jamaal Franklin and Chase Tapley were named to the all-Mountain West team, the league announced Monday. Franklin was voted to the first team, while Tapley was recognized as a third-team selection.
Franklin joins an elite list of Aztecs who have been named first-team all-Mountain West on multiple occasions. A first-team choice a season ago, Franklin now stands with Brandon Heath and Kawhi Leonard as the only SDSU players who have the distinction of being called a two-time all-MW first-team pick.
Franklin led the league in points-rebounds-assists average and was the only player to rank in the top three in scoring (3rd, 16.8), rebounding (2nd, 9.0) and steals (T-2nd, 1.56). The junior All-America candidate also ranked first in defensive rebounds (7.31), sixth in free-throw percentage (.761), seventh in minutes played (34.12), eighth in field-goal percentage (.381), eighth in blocked shots (0.75) and tied for the eighth in assists (2.81). In 16 conference games, Franklin scored in double figures all 16 times and recorded a double-double six times, including his final two outings and three of his last four games.
For Tapley, the all-league appointment is his second in as many years. The senior finished the Mountain West season ranked fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.13), seventh in assists (3.06), tied for ninth in steals (1.13) and 17th in scoring (11.6). The Sacramento, Calif., native scored in double figures nine times and had one turnover or less eight times.
This is the fourth consecutive year San Diego State has had at least one player garner first-team accolades and the ninth straight season in which an Aztec has landed on one of three all-conference squads.
The Aztecs, the No. 4 seed, open Reese's Mountain West Championship action on Wednesday night when they face the fifth-seed, Boise State, at 9 p.m. PT inside Thomas & Mack in Las Vegas. Single-session tickets are currently on sale through UNLVTickets.com.
