SDSU Looks to Enhance Postseason Resume and Climb in the Mountain West Standings on Saturday Afternoon Against 23rd-Ranked UNLV
After matching the school record for largest margin of victory in a Mountain West Conference game, San Diego State (17-7 overall; 6-4 Mountain West) concludes a brief two-game homestand when the Aztecs face 23rd/25th-ranked (AP/coaches) UNLV on Saturday afternoon at Viejas Arena at Aztec Bowl.

The game will be televised by VERSUS (San Diego Cox Cable channel 65, San Diego Time Warner 41, Dish Network channel 151), with Tim Neverett and Blaine Fowler on the call. The game can also be heard on AM 600 KOGO with Ted Leitner providing the description.

On Wednesday, SDSU improved to 8-1 in its last nine games following a defeat, with an 88-57 home pasting of Wyoming. The 31-point margin of victory tied the school record for largest margin of victory in a MWC game. Freshman Kawhi Leonard scored a career-high 26 points, added eight rebounds and connected on 10-of-14 shots from the field. Freshman Chase Tapley scored 14 points and added six assists, three steals and three rebounds. Tapley was 6-for-7 inside the arc against the Cowboys. Other Aztecs in double figures included sophomore Tyrone Shelley (12), senior Kelvin Davis (12) and junior Billy White (10).

San Diego State dominated the game, shooting 52.4 percent from the field, recording a season-high 23 assists, while limiting Wyoming to 39.2 percent from the floor and forcing the Cowboys into committing 20 turnovers. The Aztecs owned a 43-28 edge on the glass.

The Aztecs are currently in fourth place, one game behind UNLV for third and two games behind co-conference leaders 17th/17th-ranked Brigham Young and 15th/19th-ranked New Mexico. San Diego State has been snake bitten in league play, suffering three two-point losses in conference play (at Wyoming, Brigham Young and at New Mexico). Had those contests gone the other way, SDSU would currently lead the MWC race by a game over UNLV and two games over the Cougars and the Lobos.

UNLV is 19-5 overall and 7-3 in league play. The Rebels have split consecutive games against nationally-ranked opponents, defeating 12th-ranked BYU, 88-74, last Saturday and dropping a tight game to 15th-ranked New Mexico, 76-66, on Wednesday.

In 40 years at the Division I level, San Diego State has compiled a 14-78 record (15.2 percent) against teams ranked in the AP Top 25 at game time. However, the Aztecs have been better of late, winning two of their last four encounters and four of its last nine games against teams ranked in the Top 25.

Saturday marks the 48th meeting between the teams, with UNLV owning a 32-15 series lead. The Rebels have an 11-8 advantage in games played in San Diego. However, under Steve Fisher, SDSU has had an edge of late, winning three of the last four encounters and seven of the last 11 games played between the teams. Steve Fisher has been on the sidelines for 11 of San Diego State's 15 all-time victories over UNLV.
