Aztecs Open Only Two-Game Homestand of the Mountain West Conference Season; San Diego State Faces Wyoming on Wednesday Night The game will be televised nationally by The Mtn. (San Diego Cox Cable channel 320, DirecTV channel 616, Orange County Cox Cable channel 265, Las Vegas Cox Cable channel 334), with Ari Wolfe and Dave Bollwinkel on the call. The game can also be heard on AM 600 KOGO with Ted Leitner providing the description. On Saturday, San Diego State suffered its third two-point loss of the conference season as the Aztecs fell at 15th-ranked New Mexico, 88-86, in overtime. The game was close with six ties and eight lead changes, but San Diego State forced overtime after trailing by 11 points with under four minutes to play thanks to D.J. Gay. The junior guard scored 11 of his career-high 25 points in the final 2:02 of regulation to force the extra session. In overtime, the Aztecs built a three-point advantage before an 8-4 New Mexico run gave the Lobos a two-point advantage with 2.7 seconds left. The Aztecs called time out and got a great look for a three when Brian Carlwell hit Kelvin Davis past mid-court. Davis took a couple of dribbles to give himself a chance at a straightaway three-point attempt that drew iron but rolled off giving New Mexico the win. Despite the loss, San Diego State posted a strong road effort with six players reaching double figures, shooting 50.8 percent from the field, making a season-high 12 three-point field goals and winning the rebound battle (35-32). The loss snapped San Diego State's national-leading nine-game overtime winning streak. As previously noted, the New Mexico decision marked the third two-point loss in MWC play for the Aztecs this season. Had those three games gone the other way, SDSU would be leading the MWC (8-1) by a game over UNLV (7-2) and two games over New Mexico (6-3) and Brigham Young (6-3). As it is, San Diego State is tied with Colorado State for fourth place, two games behind the league tri-leaders. San Diego State is looking to even the score with Wyoming after the Cowboys rallied from 17 points down in the first meeting to claim an 85-83 victory at Arena-Auditorium on Jan. 9. Freshman forward Kawhi Leonard led the way for the Aztecs with 25 points and 12 rebounds and San Diego State played the game without junior forward Billy White, who was recovering from a high ankle sprain. Wyoming leads the all-time series, 37-29, although the Aztecs have won three of the last five and six of the last 10 encounters. Five of the last 10 meetings have been decided by four points or less or in overtime. |
