#AztecMBB Opens MW 2nd Half vs. Fresno State
Feb. 8, 2013
SAN DIEGO -
Winners of three of its last four games, No. rv/T-25 San Diego State (17-5; 5-3 Mountain West) looks to improve on its 32-game winning streak against teams from the state of California on Saturday afternoon at Viejas Arena when the Aztecs play host to Fresno State (8-13; 2-6 MW). Game time is set for 3 p.m. PT and the contest will be televised by CBS Sports Network, with radio coverage on AM 600 KOGO and 101 KGB.
Despite playing without junior point guard Xavier Thames for the fourth time in eight league games, San Diego State was able to rally for a 63-62 victory over Boise State on Wednesday at Viejas Arena. Senior guard Chase Tapley snapped out of a 0-for-12 shooting slump from three-point range (remember he has been playing with a moderate right wrist sprain), by picking up a loose ball, faking a pass, and draining a three-point shot from the left wing with :02.8 remaining to lift SDSU to the victory.
SDSU led by as many as 17 points and did not trail until 5:43 remained in the game. Down by three points with 3:20 to play, the Aztec defense held the Broncos to 0-for-4 field-goal shooting (officially 0-for-3 as the last shot was a desperation shot and does not count toward statistics) and a turnover on their final five possessions.
Senior guard James Rahon posted his second consecutive double-digit scoring game with a team-high 16 points on a season-high four three-point field goals. All-America candidate Jamaal Franklin, meanwhile, added 14 points, a team-high eight rebounds and three assists. In addition to providing the game-winning dramatics, Tapley had 12 points, a team-high five assists, two rebounds and zero turnovers in the contest as San Diego State improved to 6-0 lifetime against Boise State.
With the win, SDSU improved to a remarkable 25-5 in games decided by six points or less or in overtime since the beginning of the 2010-11 season.
Next week San Diego State hits the road for a pair of road games at Colorado State and UNLV. Those two teams are a combined 36-10, including a sparkling 26-1 at home this season.
