No. 18 Aztecs Fall In Title Match With Lobos, 68-59
Tony Snell made four 3-pointers in the first half and finished with 14 points, and Drew Gordon had 12 points and 12 rebounds as New Mexico overpowered top-seeded and No. 18 San Diego State 68-59 to win the Mountain West Conference tournament championship on Saturday night.

No. rv/25 San Diego State (15-4; 3-2 Mountain West) looks to gain ground in the MW standings on Saturday afternoon when No. 15/17 New Mexico (17-2; 4-0 MW) visits Viejas Arena in a match-up of last year's regular-season co-champions. Game time is set for 1 p.m. PT and the contest will be televised nationally by NBC Sports Network, with radio coverage on AM 600 KOGO and 101 KGB.

SDSU comes into the matinee in second place in the league standings, 1.5 games behind the conference-leading Lobos. The Aztecs, who snapped a two-game losing streak on Wednesday with a 78-57 decision at Nevada, will look to build on that momentum in front of what will be San Diego State's 17th straight sellout.

In Reno, the Aztecs received a game-high 17 points from Chase Tapley and 14 points and seven rebounds from Jamaal Franklin. Xavier Thames (8 points) returned to the lineup after missing the game at Wyoming due to a back injury, but did not start. Forward JJ O'Brien slid over to the point and responded with 12 points, two assists and zero turnovers.

The tilt between the Aztecs and Lobos will feature the top two programs in the Mountain West over the last three seasons. Since the 2009-10 season, San Diego State or New Mexico have claimed the last six MW championships (regular-season and conference tournament). In 2010, the Lobos captured the regular-season title and the Aztecs won the tournament. In 2011, SDSU shared the regular-season crown (Brigham Young) before going 3-0 at the league tourney. And then last year, UNM and San Diego State shared the regular-season title and met in the championship game of the tournament before the Lobos earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Among current Mountain West members, SDSU and New Mexico are at the top of the list in terms of overall MW titles. The Aztecs have won a conference-leading seven league championships, while the Lobos have claimed five. UNLV (4), Wyoming (2), Air Force (1) and Colorado State (1) round out the others school that have won Mountain West crowns.
