SAN DIEGO -
SDSU Game Notes
The Last Meeting
February 11, 2012
Las Vegas, Nev.
The Aztecs, the top-ranked squad in the league and Mountain West preseason favorites, are looking to stay perfect in conference action after beating Fresno State on the road and Colorado State on The Mesa last week. The latter contest needed overtime as the Rams rallied from an 18-point halftime deficit to force bonus basketball. In the extra session, however, senior guard Chase Tapley scored 12 of his 19 points to lift SDSU to victory. What made Tapley's performance more remarkable was the fact that he missed the team's shootaround due to flu-like symptoms and received an IV earlier in the day. Junior guard Jamaal Franklin, one of 25 up for the Wooden Award and MW co-player of the week, led all players with 23 points, 15 of which were off a career-high five three-pointers. At the final horn, San Diego State made a season-high 13 three-pointers, junior guard Xavier Thames was in the books for 14 points in his first game back from injury (back) and sophomore forward JJ O'Brien narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and a season-high 10 rebounds. The Aztecs are looking to move to 3-0 inside the Mountain West for a third straight season and capture their 15th win in 17 tries for the second consecutive year, which would equal the second-best start in school history (2011-12). Dating back to last year, SDSU has won six straight league games. A victory on Wednesday would tie the program's second-longest Mountain West winning streak. San Diego State won the final two games of 2010 and the first five MW games of 2011. Later in 2011, the Aztecs ran off seven in a row. The school record is eight consecutive Mountain West wins, accomplished during the 2006 campaign. |
