SAN DIEGO, Calif. -Tony Gwynn has announced a 54-game schedule for the 2013 spring season, highlighted by 23 contests against five 2012 NCAA tournament teams.
The Aztecs will open their 2013 campaign with a three-game series at the University of San Diego beginning Feb. 15 as they help the Toreros inaugurate their new Fowler Park stadium. SDSU will follow that up with a four-game home series against an Oregon State squad that was ranked for much of the 2012 season and went on the NCAA regional at LSU.
Other high-profile non-conference contests on the 2012 slate include four games at Arkansas, a team that is coming off an appearance in the 2012 College World Series, along with home-and-home contests against perennial West Coast powers UC Irvine and Long Beach State.
With the addition of Fresno State and Nevada to the Mountain West this year, the conference will once again field six teams. The Aztecs will play three-game series both home and away with each of the other five schools for a total of 24 conference contests.
The 2013 Mountain West Championship tournament will be hosted by Fresno State at the end of the regular season.
SDSU returns 24 letterwinners from a year ago including its top eight hitters led by second baseman Tim Zier (.318) and outfielder Greg Allen (.312). The Aztecs also have two of their starting pitchers back in Michael Cederoth (4-4, 4.14) and Ryan Doran (3-6, 4.50) along with closer Justin Hepner (5-3, 2.94). The Aztecs have added a group of 12 newcomers that includes two all-state honorees and a league pitcher of the year.
San Diego State will host its lone fall exhibition game against the University of San Diego this Sunday, Oct. 28, at noon at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The game will give fans a preview of both squads for the upcoming spring season and is open to the public at no charge.
