July 16, 2001

San Diego - San Diego State sophomore pitcher Royce Ring has been named to the 2001 All-West Region team by a vote of the region's coaches.

Ring, a 6-0 left-hander from San Diego (Monte Vista HS), was the Aztecs' closer this past season. In 32 appearances out of the bullpen (37.2 innings), he compiled a record of 6-2 with nine saves and a 1.19 earned run average while striking out 45 and walking only eight. He was a first-team All-Mountain West Conference selection.

Currently a member of the USA National Team playing its 30-game summer tour, Ring has appeared in five games (4.2 innings) with one save and no runs allowed. He has walked two, struck out six, and opponents are hitting just .188 against him. Team USA has a record of 10-5-1 entering tonight's game at Torrington, Conn.
