Rogers Named Aztec Baseball MVP
May 25, 2000 SAN DIEGO - San Diego State head baseball coach Jim Dietz has announced that junior catcher Brandon Rogers has been selected the Aztecs' Most Valuable Player for the 2000 season. Rogers, a product of nearby Grossmont High School, appeared in 54 games behind the plate this past season, hitting .317 with 15 doubles, eight home runs and 39 RBIs. In 27 Mountain West Conference contests, he hit .371 with 11 doubles and 28 runs batted in. Defensively, he committed only nine errors on the season for a .978 fielding percentage. Coach Dietz also announced the team award winners in seven other categories as well: Most Valuable Pitcher - Chris Hartshorn, RHP, Fr. (7-4, 3.68 ERA) Most Valuable Offensive - Paul Lockhart, OF, Sr. (.341, 13 2B, 11 HR, 54 RBI) Most Valuable Defensive - Matt Ricardy, 2B-3B, Sr. (60 games, .954 fpct) Most Valuable Reliever - Chris Dunwell, RHP, So. (25 app, 2-1, 4.34 ERA, 2 sv) Most Improved - Matt Ricardy, 2B-3B, Sr. (.348, 22 2B, 39 RBI) Most Inspirational - Jeremy Cook, RHP, Sr. (7-5, 5.76, 95.1 IP) Coaches Award - Billy Montgomery, OF, Jr. (.368, 56 runs, 29 RBI, 28 steals)
