SAN DIEGO - San Diego State pitchers Addison Reed and Stephen Strasburg have been listed as semifinalists for a pair of national baseball awards. The Aztec hurlers are both listed among the final 15 under consideration for the Pitcher of the Year Award presented by the College Baseball Foundation. In addition, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association has named Strasburg as one of 16 semifinalists for the Dick Howser Award, given to the top player in collegiate baseball. Strasburg enters the week as the national leader in strikeouts (164), earned run average (1.24), strikeouts per nine innings (16.9) and hits allowed per nine innings (4.95). "Stephen continues to be impressive week after week and he's putting up some phenomenal numbers," said Landon Holly, Pitcher of the Year Award chairman. "It should be really interesting to see how the rest of the season plays out." Reed, who has leads the nation with 17 saves, has been successful on all of his save opportunities in 2009. In 21 appearances he has recorded 30 strikeouts with five walks and a 0.42 earned run average. The CBF Pitcher of the Year Award will be presented during the College Baseball Awards Show which will be held in Lubbock, Texas, on July 2. The membership of the NCBWA will choose the Dick Howser Trophy based on two rounds of national voting. Three 2009 finalists will be announced just prior to the first game of the College World Series with a press conference slated for Saturday, June 13, at 9:30 a.m. (CDT) at the Omaha Press Club in the old First National Bank Building. The winner will be named in a national broadcast from Lubbock, Texas, on Thursday, July 2. The winner's name is inscribed on the permanent trophy, a bronze bust of Howser displayed at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg - home of the defending American League champion Tampa Bay Rays and the 1999 NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four - along with several other locations. Both the winner and his school receive a special trophy to keep. |
