Baseball Defeats Alumni 11-1

Jan. 18, 2003

San Diego - The SDSU Aztec baseball team scored five times in the seventh inning to break open a close game and went on to defeat a team of alumni, 11-1, Saturday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Alumni team was made up of former Aztecs from as far back as 1980 to several members of last year's Mountain West Conference regular-season championship squad.

The Alumni took the lead in the opening inning when Joe Bernhard led off the game with a walk and went to third on a one-out single by Faruq Darcuiel. Bernhard then came home on an RBI single by Randy Bernstein.

However, that lead was short-lived as the Aztecs tied the contest in the bottom of the first on solo home run by freshman shortstop James Guerrero. The varsity squad then took the lead in the third when Anthony Gwynn singled, stole second, and scored on a single by Guerrero.

The Aztecs opened up a three-run lead in the next frame when third baseman Chad Corona connected with a two-run homer after a single by Jake McLintock. They extended their advantage to 5-1 on a run-scoring single by Ryan Wilson in the fifth. SDSU then got RBI's from four different players during its seventh-inning uprising, and closed out the scoring with a single run in the eighth.

Along with Guerrero, McLintock also had a pair of hits for the Aztecs. Center fielder David Hall recorded a pair of walks, stole three bases and scored twice.

San Diego opens its 2003 season with a three-game series at Arizona State beginning next Friday (Jan. 24).
