Gwynn, Corona Earn Preseason All-America Honors
Jan. 2, 2003 San Diego - San Diego State junior outfielder Anthony Gwynn (Poway, Calif.; Poway HS) has been selected to the first team on Baseball America's Preseason All-America squad with teammate Chad Corona (Carlsbad, Calif.; Santa Fe Christian HS) garnering third-team honors. The team was compiled by a vote of major league scouting directors. Gwynn, a second-team preseason All-America pick a year ago, finished his sophomore season with an average of .339 along with 58 runs scored, nine doubles, four triple, a home run, 36 RBI and 25 stolen bases. He was named to the all-tournament team at the 2002 Mountain West Conference Championship. Gwynn was drafted out of Poway High School by the Atlanta Braves (33rd round). Corona, also a junior this coming season, hit .323 with 13 doubles, two triples, nine home runs and 34 RBI. He earned national player of the week honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) in 2002 and was a 16th-round pick of the Chicago Cubs in 2000.
The Aztecs open preseason practice for the upcoming season on Friday (Jan.3) at Tony Gwynn Stadium. They begin their 2003 campaign with a three-game series at Arizona State starting Jan. 24.
