SDSU-Fresno State NCAA Irvine Regional Postgame Quotes
May 30, 2009
Quotes following the San Diego State-Fresno State baseball game at the NCAA Irvine regional on Sat., May 30, 2009.
San Diego State Head Coach Tony Gwynn
"Tyler Lavigne threw an awesome game today. Brandon Meredith's two run homerun let us relax. It's a good win for us, it takes the edge off. I think we played relaxed today. We still left a lot of ducks on the pond, but bottom line is we got a "W" and live to play tomorrow and our guys are excited about that. I think we were patient and saw more pitches today. Yesterday the guys were so amped at being out there and we swung at the first thing we saw. Today we were at least a little bit better. That is what happens with a young club and the more games we play, they hopefully can calm down and realize it is still baseball."
SDSU Junior Pitcher Tyler Lavigne
"My big thing was being able to throw strikes. I felt like I didn't have my best stuff today so I just tried to locate pitches as much as possible and that was my main goal. I found my curve ball that I lost all season and made a couple of good ones, but mostly worked on the sinker."
SDSU Freshman Outfielder Brandon Meredith
"It's a better feeling today. It comes down to putting the ball in play and seeing what happens, so I'm feeling good after today's game. It was important (to get the lead) whether it came from me or anyone else on the team. To score first was probably the most important thing in this game today."
Fresno State Head Coach Mike Batesole
"I thought it was a great college baseball game as it was just unfortunate that we ended up on the wrong end. Both teams played really well and both teams played outstanding defense. They made a couple of home runs and made some great plays. You've got to give them credit. We're going to attack the zone and pitch inside."
FSU Senior Pitcher Holden Sprague
"It was a great run and we made some lasting friendships. There's no reason to tip our heads down. We'll head back to the hotel and hang out and reflect on the last two or three years. There's more to life than baseball for some of us and we'll hit the books and keep our GPA up."
FSU Junior Outfielder Steve Detwiler
"We put together some good at bats and produce a run and our pitchers we're great. They pitched a great game and our pitchers played a great game. We didn't have any errors and they had one. It's tough to lose a ballgame like that. You wish you could go all the way. Baseball is baseball. You've got to come to this point where your job is your job and then you've got to quit. I'm still a student and I've got to hit the books like Sprague's going to do and see what my grades are going to be. It's good to know that the bond everyone has built is going to last a long time. I was a Bulldog growing up and I'll always be a Bulldog for the rest of my life. I'm very proud that I came to Fresno State and didn't expect what happened the last three years."
FSU Junior Infielder Tom Mendonca
"All of us hang out whether it's on or off the field. Just looking back, I've played into tens of thousands of grounds balls and who knows on how many swings. We spend so many hours together and share a lot together and I think that's what college baseball should be about." |
